\"6-tips-assiut-photograph\"My co-author and photographer, Alisha Westerfeld, and I took thousands of photos prior to the release of The Cloth of Egypt: All About Assiut.<\/em><\/strong> \u00a0At public appearances and lectures, I’m frequently asked, “How did you get such nice photos?” \u00a0Well, it took trial and error, a lot of practice, a bit of luck, and help from our photographer mentors. \u00a0If you own a vintage assiut shawl and want to take some documentary photos, here’s our top six photography tips.<\/p>\n

1 – Use a Polarizing Filter\u00a0<\/strong>– This will cut down on the glare and reflections so your stitches will show as stitches rather than shiny, glowing metal dots.\u00a0More Info on Polarizing Filters<\/a><\/div>\n

\n2 – Use Good Lighting<\/strong> – Nothing beats indirect sunlight, but if you need to take shots indoors on a table, try to use the best quality light! \u00a0The shot above was taken with a Daylight Florescent Bulb in a standard desk lamp. \u00a0I try to get bulbs with a color temperature between 5000-6000k to get the least amount of color cast, so your photos don\u2019t turn out too yellow or blue.\u00a0More info on Light Bulbs<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n3 – Shoot From Every Angle<\/strong>\u00a0–\u00a0\u00a0 You never know what combination of lighting and camera angle will work best, so try from a number of different angles. \u00a0In the photo above, both the light\u00a0and the camera were\u00a0at an approximately 45 angle. \u00a0Lower light\u00a0angles can produce more texture and detail in\u00a0the cloth. \u00a0Top lighting will make the textile look flat and graphic.\u00a0More info on Lighting Textiles<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n4 – Use Your\u00a0Macro Setting<\/strong>\u00a0– If you are trying to get a really\u00a0detailed shot of the quality of the stitch, or the twist of the fibers in the groundcloth, switch your camera to its macro setting and to get the best quality image of the stitch. \u00a0Tips for using Macro Setting<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n5 – Choose a Good Background<\/strong> – Because assiut cloth is mesh, the color beneath will show through and impact the final result. \u00a0For darker brown\u00a0to black assiut shawls, I like to use black velvet which produces a rich deep effect, and allows the threads to still show. \u00a0For tan, cream or white vintage assiut, I like to use a\u00a0creamy colored charmeuse or dupioni\u00a0 silk which shimmers up through the stitches. \u00a0Silk Fabric Source<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n6 – Take Lots of Images<\/strong> – There is no need to be stingy when shooting digital. As you experiment with angle, lighting\u00a0and using macro to zoom in, you will want to take as many photos as your memory will allow. \u00a0This will give you more images to select from when you are choosing the best. \u00a0Save the best – delete the rest! \u00a0Table-Top Photo Tips<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
