<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/StudioDavina\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook Group<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Back in November of 2017, I wrote a blog post listing all the reasons why I prefer to use a solid, non-stretching bra band in my higher-end costumes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>While it isn\u2019t a necessity to swap out a stretchy lingerie-style bra band, they do have some limitations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Read \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.davina.us\/blog\/2017\/11\/bands-and-straps\/\"><strong><em>Musing on Embellished Bra Brands &amp; This is the heaviest duty layer, the one that provides the strength and resiliency to stand up to the pressures and forces of rigorous physical movement.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This layer should be a sturdy, thick fabric with a minimum of stretch.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ve used a wide variety of materials from heavy-weight denim, cotton canvas, pant-weight twill to recycled jeans and up-cycled woven upholstery fabric. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Here at Studio Davina, we are currently using mid-weight buckram.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If the costume will have a lot of heavyweight embellishments like chain and coin, I will use two layers.\u00a0 See it here at\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Joann Fabrics &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joann.com\/no37-midweight-buckram-23inx25-yards\/10548709.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Buckram Fabric<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Padding Layer<\/strong> &#8211; This is composed of either one or two layers of a fabric that will add a thickness to the band to make the costume more comfortable to wear and add gravitas to the finished garment. I prefer to use non-stretch materials, but since this layer is supported, if the fabric has a little give, that\u2019s okay.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, very stretchy fabrics might sag away from the inner structure, so use your best judgment.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the past, I\u2019ve used fleece, denim, corduroy, leftover velvet or velveteen from previous projects, and even up-cycled towels.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Today, we stock Pellon TP971 Fusible Thermolam. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">See it here at Joann Fabrics &#8211; <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joann.com\/pellon-tp971f-fusible-thermolam-plus-white-45in-x-10yd-bolt\/13188768.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thermolam<\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Edge Reinforcement<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Once I\u2019ve bonded or stitched together the supporting layer and the padding layer, I reinforce the edges of the band to prevent stretch.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This extra step will also help prevent the edge of the costume from rolling, giving extra support for the dancer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The bra will lay smoother and flatter across the back.
