Halloween? Consider putting a costume on your costume
Need a quick Halloween costume? Don’t want to just “be a belly dancer” or, even worse, feel a little ordinary because you’re a belly dancer all the time, not just in October? Do you have a Halloween dance gig and want to change it up?
Reappraise the Belly Dance Costumes in your Closet
I’ve been a long-time proponent of regularly looking at your costume wardrobe. Halloween is a great time to restyle existing costumes to celebrate the start of the festive season. Years ago, I wrote an article about why every dancer should consider owning a red costume. Read the article.
A red costume isn’t just auspicious at weddings, perfect for Christmas, and to wear to parties celebrating US national holidays like the 4th of July or Veterans Day.
With the right accessories, a red bedlah set can transform into a fiesty devil, become a vampy-vamp, or even a beloved character like Little Red Riding Hood.
It’s the Season of the Witch
Shalimar, my long-time creative collaborator, chose the extra mile route and accessorized her tangerine bedlah to transform it into a witch. And her prop cane has become a broom.
With a witch’s hat and broom, a festive feather shrug, and a candy-corn colored ombre veil, the look is transformed from show-girl glam to Halloween party-ready!

For more information about how this tangerine bedlah set was developed and made, check out this blog post. Want to see Shalimar in action? Catch her showreel on YouTube.
Now I’m heading back into the studio to work on demo bras for the “Costuming From the Hip” rewrite.
Until next time,
