Sources for Assiut, Fall 2016

davina-zills-assiut2-webHello Gang!

I’ve been PUMMELLED by requests for assiut!  Not my book, The Cloth of Egypt: All About Assiut, but the cloth itself.  The truth of the matter is that I buy assiut and I use it. I simply don’t stockpile to resell. However, in the past year, I have been purchasing modern assiut panels and dresses to start the costume build for an upcoming book that I’ll be working on in 2017.  Now is a great time to share my trusted sources for purchasing assiut.

Besheer on eBay

My longest running relationship with a vendor of assiut is with the eBay vendor who goes by the handle Besheer.  I have purchased more than 20 panels and three robes from this dealer in the past four years.  The robe I’m wearing in the image on the left was purchased from them several years ago.  It’s soft, has held up to numerous washes and still looks stunning both on stage and up close. I’m especially fond of their assiut triangles with crocheted beaded trim.  These panels really hold up to the abuse that our dance gives them.  This is the person I recommend most often when folks ask me who I buy from.  They have a store on eBay, be sure to check them out.

Desirees Treasures on Etsy

A more recent addition to the vendors I’ve been shopping from is Desirees Treasures over on Etsy.  Her store is filled with new and vintage assiut in a variety of colors and designs.  I’ve only purchased a few pieces from her so far, but her service is fast and her items have matched their photos and descriptions.  I especially love the blue assiut ensemble at right, that I put together with an assiut robe and shawl that were purchased separately, but come together to make a lovely ensemble.

21st Century Vamp on Etsy

If you are looking for exceptionally high-quality antique and vintage pieces collected with taste and care, you can expect to find the finest on the Etsy store of the 21st Century Vamp.  Her exquisite pieces are delicious to behold, and often draw the highest prices – and rightfully so!  Although I’ve only been able to make one purchase from her collection, it’s a great place to window shop for the most sumptuous cloth.  If you are building your vintage collection, her shop is a must visit!

SaftiCraft Website

Perhaps my all-time favorite piece of modern assiut is a long narrow scarf with a rich diamond pattern embroidered into it purchased from SaftiCraft.  I’ve made several purchases directly from their website and though I had to wait a bit of time for the item to arrive, the cloth they carry is glorious.  They make rich, densely patterned soft modern assiut that rivals vintage pieces for the number and quality of metal stitches.  You can see my scarf, affectionately known as “Waldo,” wrapped around my head in the image at left.

davina-torquay1-webMelodia Designs Website

If you love the look of assiut, but find the metal is irritating to your skin, why not take check out the faux assiut cloth designed and manufactured by Melodia. This San Diego-based designer has created an entire line of day wear, practice, and performance pieces.  Printed on high-quality stretch fabrics, the pattern is so authentic, at a glance, it fools the eye of even discerning assiut fans. I simply love my Melodia skirt! Though I adore real assiut, this skirt is so comfortable to wear, that I find myself reaching for it over and over.

61HupZBUVPL._SX394_BO1,204,203,200_If you would like to find out more about this fabulous cloth, might I recommend checking out my book?  Over 20 years in the making, The Cloth of Egypt: All About Assiut is my most ambitious research project, turned book and it includes information about the history, technology, and use of this beautiful ethnographic textile.

Good luck on your own personal quest to find the assiut pieces that are perfect for your collection or costuming project!

Happy Costuming!

Kickstarter Campaign for “Becoming a Belly Dancer: From Student to Stage”

bab-front-coverI’m so pleased to announce that we are finished with the manuscript for our upcoming book “Becoming a Belly Dancer: From Student to Stage.”  The text is laid into the document, it’s been edited, formatted, and all the photos are in place. The book is just a few steps away from being published. However, this is where we hit the biggest financial hurdles, covering the expenses of making the leap from a finished .pdf to a printed book.

jean-jingler-webWith that in mind, we’ve put together a Kickstarter campaign to take pre-orders for our book!!!  We’ve created a menu of enticing options from simply buying a signed book for the nice price of $35. The ultimate MSRP is still TBA, but I think it will be somewhere around $45 on Amazon. But we’ve created a few other levels that offer our new book, “Becoming a Belly Dancer: From Student to Stage,” bundled together with some fun costume accessories like hair flowers, Saroyan coin earrings, and Jean Jinglers.  Poppy Maya and I are also offering a few custom crafted costume pieces as well!

We are asking you, our friends, fans, and supporters to take a moment and visit our Kickstarter page and consider helping us achieve our goals by backing our campaign and pre-ordering a signed book, or picking up a hand-crafted costume accessory too!

I want to thank you for your time and continued support of my projects!

Strategic Sale Shopping and the Glories of Ulta Beauty

Belly Dance Makeup - Shopping at Ulta - Davina's aka Dawn Devine's recommendations.Lets get real, we are all living on a budget.  If you have been dancing for a while, you know how important your makeup is and how expensive it can be to experiment with different brands, products, and formulations.  When I’m preparing for a show, I can sometimes pile on more than 20 different cosmetics to achieve as smooth and flawless a finish as possible.  My mission is to enhance my beauty, create a look worthy of the belly dance mystique, and to look younger, healthy, and vibrant.  PHOTO LEFT:  Long ago I got into the habit of the pre-show selfie to help remember the look, the costume, the moment.

Finding the perfect products to create the look you want on stage, that will hold up to the rigors of performance, and will not irritate your skin or eyes is quite a heft challenge.  You will, without a doubt, wind up buying many products that simply don’t work for you. Some won’t look as good on your skin as they did in the package, while others won’t be able to last through a show without running, fading, or flaking. It takes some trial and error before you figure out what are your holy grail products.  As a budget conscience dancer, I try to save money on the products I use, by shopping sales, using coupons, and buying workhorse products that I already know will provide good value for my money.

Belly Dance Makeup - Shopping at Ulta - Davina's aka Dawn Devine's recommendations. The store Ulta is one of my go-to places to shop for both drugstore and prestige makeup lines. Ulta has online and brick and mortar stores, so while it’s fun to go in and shop, I can often find items that are sold out in my local store, available on line.  ((And though it’s a bit, if you buy $50 – you will get free shipping))  Ulta has a liberal return policy.  Try a product and don’t like it?  Return it for refund within 60 days of purchase or store credit if longer.  Buy on line?  Don’t like the product?  Return at the nearest store or ship it back. Also, Ulta has a great customer loyalty program, that, for the repeat shopper, can garner bonus samples, free shipping, special sales, birthday gifts, and more. Their rewards program is accessible both in stores and on the Ulta website. http://www.ulta.com/  PHOTO ABOVE:  I was caught in the act of checking my lips for touch-ups.  Even though our designated changing spot was very dark, I found a spot light and did a last minute check.  Shout out to Alisha Westerfeld for this catching this moment.

Ulta’s budget friendly store brand that has some of the most frequent sales and deepest discounts.  As I write this blog, Ulta is currently offering a “Buy Two – Get Two Free” sale!  These sales are great when you are hunting for new products, because you can try them at a fraction of the cost, and return them if they don’t work out. Add one of Ulta’s infamous $3.50 off a $10 purchase and the deal gets even sweeter.  Sign up for their mailing list to receive sale notifications and coupons in the mail!

Belly Dance Makeup - Shopping at Ulta - Davina's aka Dawn Devine's recommendations. After a bit of experimenting, I’ve fallen in love with quite a few of the Ulta brand products. Last weekend, I wore three of my favorites during performance. I use a multi-step lipstick application, and I adore using their Double-Duty Lip Stain as my base layer for all of my performance lip-looks.  My over 40 skin requires a layer of silicone infused primer to help smooth out my skin’s imperfections, and the Ulta Matte Prim really does the trick. I also have an Ulta Sculpting palette, a collection of three powders that serve as my contour, blush setting powder and a highlight. Having three products in one package saves time in rooting around my cosmetic bag, and it saves on space when traveling.  LEFT PHOTO: Post-show with half the warpaint removed to demonstrate how effective that makeup was.  I was in this face for 7 hours total at this point, and that’s what my lipstick looked like after dancing, drinking, and eating.  Go-Go Turban Hair.

Even if you aren’t interested in checking out the house brand, there are many-many more beauty products frequently on sale at Ulta.  I have been dancing for many years, and have used their website to track sales.  The result is that I have many of their products, from both high and low priced lines, in my performance makeup kit.

This week, I’m going to continue my experimentation and order a few things from the Ulta brand while the B2-G2 sale is on!  Time to visit their website and invest in some new items to try!

Good Luck with your own personal experimentation!!

Who’s That Girl in Assiut? Terpsichore

As many of you know, I have an ever growing collection of vintage postcards of lovely ladies, actresses, singers, and dancers lavishly dressed in assiut. However, I’ve never been able to land my hands on a hard-copy of this incredible image. I first spotted this photo of an unknown dancer many years ago during an internet search. But, I could never hunt down an original.  This appears to be a theatrical post-card, widely used in the first quarter of the 20th century as a keepsake for fans after stage and cinema performance.  Due to the age of the photo, this image is in the public domain, and consequently, there are thousands of digital copies floating around the web.  Our  mystery beauty is wearing an absolutely fabulous pair of assiut harem pants embellished with beads and fringe.  The dancer signed this post-card with her stage name or the title of her role, Terpsichore, a popular theme for early-modern art dancers.  Her lovely ensemble has all of the hallmarks of orientalist costumes typical of the era from 1905 – 1920.  I keep seeing her around the web, floating across Pinterest boards and Tumblr feeds, but never on a sale page.  Someday, I hope to make her a part of my permanent collection.  Until then, I’m happy to admire this digital version.   Be inspired.

Assiut Scraps? Assiut Hair Flowers!

Assiut Hair Flowers from ScrapsScraps!  We all make them, and for many of us, they are a difficult thing to part with. I too have been saving up the tiny bits and pieces of hundreds of assiut costumes, and have amassed quite a little hoard of assiut scraps.  My scrap box went from something a bit bigger than a shoe-box, to a pretty large flip-top tub. I’ve found I’ve had to sort them by size and usability and it took a day to realize that I making scraps faster than I’m getting rid of them!

One of my favorite scrap-using projects are hair flowers. We sat down in the studio and planned out a collection of hair flowers made from five simple ingredients

1 – Black Assiut Scraps
2 – Black Fusible Interfacing
3 – Hair Clip
4 – Assorted Small Metal Beads
5 – Plain Black Tulle
6 – Black Button and Carpet Threads

In a nutshell, the process works likes this.

1 – Pick out a motif you like.  If you don’t have any complete motifs, create your own by stitching smaller pieces together.
2 – Use one or two layers of fusible interfacing to stiffen the assiut motif.  If you want it super-stiff – try using some spray starch to give it more body.
3 – Cut out a strip of tulle approximately 12” long, and gather along one long edge.  This will create the ruffled cockade that will serve as a base for our assiut motif.
4 – Using heavy-duty thread, stitch the stiffened assiut motif to the tulle cockade through the center.
5 – Add any beads or baubles you crave to embellish your hair flower.
6 – Flip over and stitch on a hair clip.

And Volila – An assiut hair flower made from scraps.

We’re making a batch of these to add to our Etsy store, but if you have your own assiut scrap stash, give making your own hair flowers a go.  It’s a fast, easy and fun hand-sewing project that takes a few hours, depending on how quickly you sew. Assiut, assuit, asyut, azute, or tulle bi telli – no matter how you spell it or cut it, the fabric is amazing!

Best of luck using up your scraps!
