Belly Dance Makeup Challenge – Week One Wrap Up

Hello Gang!

I’m one week into my 2017 belly dance makeup challenge!  Everyday during the month of June, I’ll be putting on a new and different belly dance performance makeup look.  In this post, I’m going to address four of the most common questions I’ve heard over the past week since I’ve begun this project.  You can find the videos on YouTube, here.

Q: Why Are You Doing A  30 Day Vlogging Challenge?

A: When I was teaching formal, weekly classes, makeup tutorials, demos, and workshops were built into the yearly flow of my course material.  My philosophy of “Five Layers of Belly Dance Appearance”  is mapped out thoroughly in the book “Becoming a Belly Dancer: From Student to Stage,.” It states that layer #2 is Grooming, or hair and makeup.  Since I rarely perform with my hair showing, I switch out “hair” for a headdress, which is really layer#4, accessories.

The only way to get good at applying makeup is to practice.
With this month long challenge, I get the two-fold benefit of making practice time for myself and having the opportunity to share my approach to putting on a performance face. I’m not a makeup artist, I’m just a dancer with a lot of experience and a bit of a makeup nerd.

Above: My primer selection for this month.

Q: How did you come up with the list of Challenges?

A: On a long car drive just after Monther’s day from Palm Springs to San Jose, I started thinking about this challenge.  I had done it last year. I was thinking about how I would take it to the next level this year.  Instead of being a “Pantser,” trying to come up with this looks on the fly, I decided to create scenarios that dancers might find them in when preparing for performances. I just went back in time, mentally flipping through memories of events and costumes I’ve worn, made, and seen, and began my list.  Some are more obvious than others, but all the prompts originated in something I’ve seen or done in the past 30 years of my dance career. Q: Who did you learn your makeup technique from?

A: This question could be an entire blog post!  I’ve always sought out and enjoyed makeup classes.  My first formal class was in college in my first fashion program.  The required “Modelling” class included a lot of info on beauty makeup.  I then went through a theater program, where I took classes on theatrical makeup techniques.

As a belly dancer, I’ve taken makeup workshops as often as possible with as many different dancers as I could find.  Early on, I studied with Meleah, a professional model, makeup artist, and a killer belly dancer.  More recently I’ve become an avid fan of Princess Farhana and Devilla. Who put together the FANTASTIC video workshop Bombshell: Dramatic Makeup for the Stage, Photos, & Glamorous Occasion.   I also take lessons locally in my area from talented regional belly dancers and makeup artists such as Adriana.  And of course, I took Sara Shrapnell’s makeup workshop in preparation for collaborating on Chapter 3 of “Becoming a Belly Dancer.”   Over the yeas, of this makeup research,  I’ve amassed a huge collection of tips, tricks, and product knowledge.  I’m happy to share the knowledge I’ve collected over the years with my students near and far.

Q: Are you going to make sewing videos?

A: YES!  I’m working on overcoming many of the challenges of filming costuming.  I’ve been making loads of video clips testing different fabrics, different shot angles, and lighting.  What I’ve learned so far is that I need to invest in more lights, and plan some demo projects. I’m pleased to say that I have almost ironed out the technical details.  After this month of makeup, watch for a series of basic sewing demos.  My plan is to produce a bunch of really basic videos that can serve as a library to refer to in later more project-based videos.  I’ll be creating demos that appear in my books – showcasing the materials and projects that I would choose to make the garments.

Thank you for joining me on my makeup adventure and for future sewing projects.

May your liner never run!

PS – Although I recommend you seek out products that work well for your particular complexion color and texture.  Here is a list of the products that I’m using throughout these makeup challenges.  Keep in mind that I’m 49, so I really enjoy using a pore filling primer to smooth out the texture of my skin. If you are younger and smoother, you may not require such extreme measures.  Also, I have very dry skin, so that does impact my choices.  If you have oilier skin, you may require different foundations and powders than I choose to use.

Makeup List – Part 1 – Complexion products

30 Day Belly Dance Makeup Challenge – 2017

Hello Gang!

It’s been nearly a year since I tackled the challenge of putting on a full face of belly dance makeup every day – and vlogging about it on YouTube.  That was last year in July, and I was new to vlogging, uploading videos on a regular schedule to YouTube, and it has been many years since I was working as a pro dancer and putting on performance makeup multiple times a week.  I flew by the seat of my pants making it up as I went along.  Some of the vlogs are interesting.  Many of them are informative.  A few of them contain questionable content.  Here is the playlist from last year, in case you would like to check it out again, or watch it for the first time.

Prompt List – No flying “Seat of the Pants”

This year I thought I would pull from the lessons learned last year and be a bit better prepared.  The first step was to brainstorm a list of concepts to use as a springboard for coming up with new belly dance makeup looks.  I’ve seen many a challenge list over on Instagram and so I crafted my list of 30 prompts and created a graphic to share around social media.

A few pieces of equipment

I’m still filming on my iPhone 6s+ which continues to serve me well.  For my holiday gift last December, I requested both makeup and a microphone.  I was pleased to score a Kat Von D Metal/Matte eyeshadow palette, which is now out of production and is selling for 100+ dollars on eBay, as well as a Blue Snowball microphone with stand and a spit guard. Over the course of the next several weeks, I will be putting both of these new treasures to use!

I also bought a few affordable clamp lamps to light up my work table for top-down video production. Between the new lights and the new mic, I’m looking and sounding better this year.

More Palettes – More Colors – More potential

Last year I was really on a quest to learn as much as I could about the makeup industry, the ingredients within cosmetics and how they reacted on my skin.  I’ve watched hundreds of hours of YouTube makeup guru’s, perhaps it’s even thousands of hours at this point!  I’m not a makeup artist or YouTube guru, but I am fairly competent within my niche of belly dance, and I want to share with students of the dance the how and why of belly dance makeup.  While I stuck to a small assortment of products, this year, I’ve got more to choose from in my collection, so I will pull from my full selection of makeup.  I’m going to try to be more informative explaining my why and how I intend to use the items in my makeup hoard.

Day 1 – Go-To Belly Dance Look

The first vlog of the channel is now up on YouTube! The new playlist has been made and the game is afoot! I hope you will take some time this month to watch a few of the posts. I’ve started a playlist where all the videos will be posted as they are finished.

June is going to be fun, but a lot of work!  I’m hoping to streamline the video process and learn new editing techniques, as well as getting more and more comfortable in front of the camera.  Nothing like having a daily challenge to keep you motivated!

To beautiful makeup and costumes!

Book Reviews by Sophia Ravenna

Nothing makes an author’s heart sing like the sweetest bird than a great book review.  As a book writer, I always get a little tingly with anticipation when I have the opportunity to read my book reviews. Reviews are the lifeblood of the publishing business.  While it’s easy to find reviews on a site like Amazon.com, it can be much harder to find book reviews in print magazines, digital articles, or on individual websites. Today, I want to share a pair of reviews that warmed the very cockles of my heart and made my inner author glow with sheer delight.

New Books = New Reviews

Last year, in 2016, I had the pleasure of finishing up a two-year long collaboration, Becoming a Belly Dancer: From Student to Stage, with Sara Shrapnell, Poppy Maya, and photographer Alisha Westerfeld. (on Amazon)  I also launched my own new title, Zills, Music on Your Finger Tips, with photos by Alisha Westerfeld and illustrations by George Goncalves. (on Amazon) So I’ve been on the hunt for book reviews that I can both quote and analyze.  I like to use feedback from critiques to improve my future writing.

I’m a blog reader

As part of my “job” as a belly dance writer, I devote quality time each week to reading blog posts, watching YouTube videos, and listening to podcasts about our art form.  It was quite a delight and surprise to find a book review on a blog I regularly read and enjoy, Sophia Dances: Confessions of a Dance Pants Addict.  I use the blog aggregator Bloglovin’ to collect, store and deliver blogs in an easy, visually appealing, and readable way. So when I saw my own book title appear in my stream, I was THRILLED!

Sophia Ravenna is a professional writer and researcher located in the Pacific North West.  I’ve been following her blog for a while, and I find her reviews to be thoughtful and insightful. Apparently, my co-author  Sara Shrapnel gave her a pre-release copy of Becoming a Belly: Dancer from Student to Stage for review purposes when they met in person at the Seattle-based event, Waking Persephone.  So I was absolutely DELIGHTED by the surprise of reading her review!  Since Sophia had written so honestly and thoughtfully about Becoming, I reached out and asked if she would like a review copy of Zills.  When she accepted I must admit, I was excited. The when I read Sophia Ravenna’s review of  Zills: Music On Your Finger Tips, I spent the day walking on air.

Review of Becoming a Belly Dancer: From Student to Stage by Sophia Ravenna

Recently, Sophia shared an image of one of her boxes of books.  From the looks of the contents, this is quite the enticing collection, and there will surely be reviews of other publications in her future blog posts.  And as you probably figured out, I’m looking forward to catching them all!

My hunt for reviews of my books will always continue.  If you ever spot one, even if it’s unfavorable, drop me a line at davina@davina.us and let me know!  And if you regularly write a blog, have a podcast, or YouTube channel – or simply want to share your favorites, let me know and I’ll add it to my Bloglovin or YouTube feeds!

Thanks for sharing the review love with me today!

Amabella Magazine is coming soon!

Today I spent five hours working on a new project I’m very excited about, Amabella Magazine.  This is a brand new, all digital, and absolutely free magazine!  We are starting out on ground zero, but our editorial team is the same group I worked with to put together the definitive guide to belly dance development, Becoming a Belly Dancer: From Student to Stage.  Photographer Alisha Westerfeld, belly dance teacher and author, Sara Shrapnell, international belly dancer, author and stylist Poppy Maya and I are working together to create a new style of belly dance magazine.

Our mission is to create useful, inspirational, beautiful and, perhaps best of all free magazine.  We are currently working on developing our website and collecting the content for our V0 issue featuring Bay Area belly dancer Basinah on the cover.  We’re still in progress, so this cover is current as of today, but will probably change and evolve as we get our content into the magazine.

Like my first magazine, Costumer’s Notes: Behind the Seams, Amabella magazine will be available for free view on the Issuu website, or you can catch it embedded on this website and other websites.  We’ve already started a subscription list over on the main website, Amabella Magazine.  If you would like to receive notifications of when issues of Amabella are released, just sign up for the newsletter!

This magazine is totally new, so I’m not sure where it will go in the fullness of time.  The focus is belly dance, but beyond that, we are still But for now, we’re filling it with the kind of content the Amabella editorial team enjoys reading.  We’re working towards filling our new magazine with a combination of interesting and informative information.  Over the next few weeks, I’ll be spending quality time at my computer working on the layout and design of this maiden issue.

I’ll check back in here when the publication is complete and uploaded to the Issuu website! I’m so pleased and happy, and very excited to take this next step in my publishing journey.

Event Sewing Kit

Two weeks ago, I attended one of my favorite local events, Bay Area Belly hosted by Sudeep.  My co-authors and I set up our “Portable Book Stall.”  Sara Shrapnell and I manned the booth with the help of Poppy Maya and our favorite photographer Alisha Westerfeld.  It was the first time that both of our 2017 releases, Becoming a Belly Dancer: From Student to Stage, and Zills: Music on Your Finger Tips are completely finished and on our rack!  While I was at this show, I had a few more things to stitch down on the assiut costume on the dress form.  This ensemble, titled “Assiut & Black Loops,” needed to have the lining of the bra cups installed.

Finishing Costumes At Events

As I worked on these finishing touches, quite a few people showed an interest in my sewing kit.  I frequently take sewing projects with me to events and have been carrying around the same basic tools in an old kid’s pencil box for many years.  At this event, however, I had so many people inquire about the contents of my box, I thought I would take a moment to share it with everyone.  Aren’t we all sort of curious about what other people carry around in their bags and purses?  So without further ado, to my event sewing kit!

It’s a Pink Pencil Case

I’ve been hauling this plastic kid’s pencil box around for many years now and hit has held up great.  What I like about this particular container is the clamshell design, so when it’s opened, both sides are quite deep.  When I’m working on a particular project, I can throw in all the special things that I need to get the project done.  It is deep enough to hold a cone of serger thread or a couple of bags of rhinestones.

Davina's Small Sewing Kit

The Items I Always Carry

When you open my box, you can see that there is plenty of room if I need to hold more, but it’s not as big as carrying around a tackle box.  When I am called to work in theatrical environments or at bridal stores, I bring a much bigger and more complete kit.  For belly dance events, I’m only going to be working with my hands, so the basics are all related to hand sewing and fitting.

Pins and Pins

The one thing that gets pulled out at virtually every belly dance event is my tin of safety pins.  I try to keep an assortment of sizes, but I always make sure to have a lot of sturdy large safety pins for any last minute costuming needs.  A bar pops loose, or a dancer wants the added security of pinning their belt to their skirt or as insurance against a bra popping open, I’m ready!   For sewing purposes, I also carry long quilting pins to hold things together as I sew.

Hand Sewing Essentials

Because I’m never sure what type of needle I will need at any given moment, I always carry a variety set of needles.  I also carry along beeswax to condition the thread I’m working with.  I am often called in to do on-the-spot costume adjustments, so I keep a measuring tape in the box as well.

Tools for the Job

I also have a set of hand sewing tools that live in the box.  A pair of thread snips and embroidery scissors make quick work of cutting threads.  The green item is a seam ripper which is great for unpicking a lining to get inside a costume to make alterations. I carry a seam gauge around with me everywhere and use it on practically every costume project.  Two thimbles for options and different uses and the round tan object is a thread puller which is especially handy when going through the tough multiple layers of a bedlah set.

What’s not shown in these photos is a small baggy of hooks and eyes and three spools of thread in white, mid-grey, and black (which I haven’t refilled yet.)  I learned long ago working in theater, that it’s more important to match the tone of the thread than the color, and, realistically speaking, I can’t bring every thread color along.  If I’m working on a particular assignment, I will pack those items into the box as well.  And that is a tour of my event sewing kit!
