Princess Farhana Features “The Cloth of Egypt” on Her Blog!

WEB-PRO-1 -PRINCESS-FARHANA-ADJ-DAWN-SQUAREThe super-glamourous author/dancer Princess Farhana featured me in a write up about “The Cloth of Egypt: All About Assiut!”  entitled “The Queen of Assiut.”  I’m so very honored to work with Princess Farhana, who is beyond a triple threat – working as a dancer, instructor, workshop leader, costume designer, and author! We were so pleased to feature her in a gorgeous, retro inspired rhinestone embellished assiut costume on the back cover of the book.  Alisha Westerfeld shot the Princess at the last big MECDA show, Cairo Caravan in 2013. In this photo, she is wearing a teal and blue assiut bra encrusted with rhinestones and dripping with jewelry.  This bra is part of a collaborative costume design, where I designed and built the bra and the Princess made the belt and skirt.  The white vintage assiut is very special, a treasure from the trove of the Princess.  During Cairo Caravan, I actually worked on this bra, finishing up the fitting details and the last of the embellishments.

Lynette Harris of Gilded Serpent eZine and I shared a table at this event, and during the outreach, we had the opportunity to chat with dancers, costumers, teachers, and even had a visit by the dance impresario Miles Copeland of Bellydance Superstars.  Through it all, I was pleased to get this beautiful bra completed.

FactsaIMG_0748-L about the Costume:  The turquoise and blue rhinestone costume was fun to design and build, and I wanted to take a few moments to discuss this particular bra.  The base was purchased at Target for under $20.  I bought the two colored assiut panels direct from Egypt from a vendor on eBay, total cost with shipping was $100.  The blue bi-cone Swarovski crystals were purchased from Rhinestone Guy.  The tummy drape is two necklaces from Shiny Sparkly Things.  Other materials that went into this bra includes: thread, hooks and eyes, grosgrain ribbon and buckram interfacing.  The total for materials and supplies of the bra and belt are approximately, $140.  Not bad for such a bright and blingy costume.

When the bra was completed, I gave it, and all the rest of the materials and supplies to the Princess to complete the design.  In August 2014, the completed costume was debuted at Assiut Fest, and this photo was snapped by Alisha Westerfeld.  What a beautiful costume on a lovely dancer! Wanna see it in action – check out the video below.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Basinah-All Drapes-WEBThere is nothing like a tasty treat on one of the USA’s most important holidays, Thanksgiving.  So, to celebrate, I’ve begun to put up the videos from our party, Assiut Fest, held back in August.  We had an incredible lineup of dancers and a great turn out. This is a performance from that show by the lovely Bay Area rising star Basinah performing to classic music in a retro fusion costume that appears in Cloth of Egypt.  Video was shot by Mark Scott and edited by Jerry Case. Thanks to everyone who came to the event, supported the production of the book, bought me coffee, or just gave me a shoulder to cry upon!  You, my friends, family, and fans, are what I am most thankful for this Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

PS: The book is done, so I get to work on some of my project backlog, including putting up a collection of videos from Assiut Fest. If you want to see more as they become available, you can subscribe to my YouTube channel.

Performance Bag Essentials Checklist for Belly Dancers

Here’s a useful checklist that appeared in the spring 2009 Costumer’s Notes.  Between 2005-2009, I put together a printed version of my newsletter for distribution at events I attended.  When I was teaching belly dance regularly, one of the important parts of my “Preparing for Performance” student handout was this checklist.  Although this may seem like overkill, the more events you do, the more you realize that there’s a lot of little things you may find you need!  When I was dancing multiple times a week, organization was the key to being able to go from ordinary woman to performance goddess in 30 minutes flat.

Book Reports: Cloth of Egypt – Proof #2

The second proof arrived!  And there was much rejoicing!  Now that the proof is in my hot little hands, I’m in the middle of fixing a bunch of issues – small issues – but in a 260 page book, there are a lot of them. We’re adding commas, taking out double spaces, and using proper italics to denote book titles are just to name a few!  The team of crack editors which includes a professional editor/copy writer, a tech support god, a crack librarian, a former school teacher, and my mom, are all going over a copy of the book hunting for the rogue typo’s, poorly formed sentences, and other problems.   I’m estimating 3 weeks for the editors to go through their copies, get them back to me, and for us to get the edits into place in the publication.  We are REALLY close to done!

The cover is finalized and approved – with Her Royal Highness, Princess Farhana of Hollywood on the back cover wearing a bra made from modern assiut and dripping in a vintage assiut shawl.  Alisha Westerfeld took this photo during a super-fast 15 minute photo shoot on the Queen Mary Ship in the Observation Bar.  Using existing light, and dodging tour groups, we managed to get this amazing shot!  One tour guide, seeing the Princess in her glorious makeup and wrapped in assiut, told his group that she was actually a ghost!  The lovely 1930’s era decor made for an amazing, and quite appropriate, backdrop for the vintage cloth.  Find out more about Princess Farhana on her website.

Davina-Repair-Assiut-Detail-WEB

It turns out that there are some photos that didn’t quite make the grade in quality.  We have to find replacements for about half a dozen images, and we’ve got holes for another 20 or so more.  So we’re sorting, selecting, prepping about 25-30 images.  We have another 60 or so that need contrast adjustments to appear perfect in the final publication.  Like the image above, I’m working on making the final few fixes and then the work will be complete!  Now, if only it were as easy as threading up a needle and repairing a split in vintage assiut cloth.  But as you can see in the image below, of 12 pages, 6 spreads, the book is looking less like a random collection of text and pictures, and more like the cohesive publication it will be in a matter of weeks.

If you haven’t signed up for my mailing list –  now is the time!  I’ll be sending out a discount code for the book via my mailing list when the project is done!

Now, I’ve gotta get back to work!
